Training Course, Cascais, Portugal, 22 - 28 October 2019
International training course ComEdu: Comics as a Method in Education in Portugal - an adventure for 24 comic artists and youth educators from Latvia, Estonia and Portugal to learn how to facilitate comics workshops, make comics and develop educational methods based on comics. Led by comic artist Amanda Baeza, youth work facilitators Sintija Lase and Beatriz Branco.
This training course is part of the ComEdu: Comics for Education, a strategic partnership between 3 partners: Grafiskie Stāsti (Latvia), NGO Mondo (Estonia) and Rota Jovem (Portugal) in the field of youth, supported by Erasmus+: Youth in Action program. Its innovative practices aim to improve and expand international youth work by bringing comic artists and youth workers together and developing educational comics as a learning and communication tool in non-formal education.

The Picnic Art Festival is a diverse international festival in Shanghai, China. Kuš! had a little mini kuš! exhibition there and was represented by it's editor David Schilter, who gave a public talk about comics from Latvia.

100 years of Latvian history from a slightly different perspective... Young Baltic artists interpreted the stories of Latvian personalities such as Aspazija, Vaira-Vīķe Freiberga, Mark Rothko and others in comics form.

Comics Festival, St.Petersburg, Russia 26.-29.09.2019
kuš! will be at the 12th international comic festival Boomfest in St. Petersburg! At the colorful kuš! table you can meet kuš! editor David Schilter and Oskars Pavlovskis. Oskars and David will also hold a public presentation of working with comics in Latvia. Увидимся!

The wonderful Finnish illustrator, comic artist and art educator Anna Sailamaa is returning to Riga to visit schools and libraries to give comics workshops. And on Monday there will be a public talk.
Anna Sailamaa (1979) is a visual storyteller, freelance illustrator and art educator. She started working with comics around 2007 while studying at Aalto University in Helsinki. At the moment she makes drawings, illustrations, comics, animations, takes part in exhibitions and works as a teacher at the Institute of Design in Lahti. Her comics have been translated also in France, Belgium and Poland and she has won the main prize of the international comics competition at the “Fumetto” comics festival in Lucerne, Switzerland. Anna Sailamaa is a member of the Finnish comic artists association “Kutikuti” which promotes the status of new and high-quality Finnish comics in Finland and abroad since 2005. In 2016 Anna visited Latvia to hold a comics workshop for youth at the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre where the “Kutikuti” 10-year anniversary exhibition “Tempora Mutantur” took place. In 2016 kuš! komiksi published Anna Sailamaa’s comics short story “Everyone Is Hungry” in the mini kuš! series.
The event and visit in Riga are organized by the Nordic Council of Ministers Office in Riga in cooperation with kuš! komikss. Supported by the Embassy of Finland in Riga.

The exhibition 'Redrawing Stories from the Past: Escape and Migration' presents the works from four European artists - Lina Itagaki (Lithuania), Emilie Josso (France), Julia Kluge (Germany) and Alice Socal (Italy). With a focus on twelve different countries, they tell the story of flight and migration as a consequence of National Socialism. All comics are based on historic documents researched for the 'Redrawing Stories from the Past' project.

Last autum Georgy Elaev has discovered a new world by meeting Latvian artists and their works. The impact has made him travel to Rucka residency in Cēsis and make a comic about discovering the Latvian art scene and his international comics energy transition. After seven rainy days, ten pints of local beer, and nine potato pancakes his comic was ready!
Georgy also brought zines by Siberian artists and the Russian edition of "Fenix" by Zane Zlemeša.
Georgy Elaev is a comic artist living and working in Siberia. He co-founded Space Cow Press and Comic Arts Tyumen festival.

Johanna Rojola and Taina Hakala will be talking about their work in art, present the Femicomix Finland network and hold a comic reading.
Johanna Rojola is a Finnish comics artist, activist and art teacher. She studied comics in Angouleme art school. She is a founding member of Kuti collective and Femicomix Finland (FEMSKT).
Taina Hakala is a selfmade artist working with comics, collage, drawing, photography. She organizes comics reading sessions and other network activities. She is also a member of Femicomix Finland (FEMSKT).
